Local Attractions

Historic Kohukohu is among NZ's oldest European settlements and was a major trading centre for Kauri timber export to Sydney and San Francisco in the 1800s.

NZ's oldest stone footbridge and the first Freemasons building are noted on the Historic Kohukohu Village walk trail where guests can familiarize themselves with cottages, villas and public buildings that in recent times have been renovated.

There is a brochure with a map available at the Kohukohu store and at the library.

Mitimiti - our local beach

West coast - about as a remote feeling as you will ever find. Swimming is not advisable or at your own risk.  Wild horses are a common scene and treks available. Open to 4 wheel drive. Mussels and pipi may be gathered off the rocks at low tide on the northern end of the beach. Great spot for surf casting or beach walking and picnics among the sand dunes. Mitimiti cemetery is worth a visit and the last resting place of Ralph Hotere NZ iconic artist.

Local walks

  • Kohukohu Historic Village walk
Pick up a brochure at the local store or library. The walk takes you around Kohukohu, and features NZ's oldest walking bridge, NZ's oldest Masonic Hall, and other historic buildings and places of interest.
  • Mitimiti Beach
Walk along the sand north or south and experience the feeling of remoteness on one of NZ's most spectacular west coast beaches. Be prepared to cross the many streams which are shin deep after rains.
  • Mitimiti Beach to Pawarenga
Also known as the 'Golden Stairs Walk' which gets its name from the golden bloom of the many Kowhai trees from August to November. Start from Mitimiti beach, walk north along beach to Whangape Heads, then turn inland towards Pawarenga. The steep inclines are take you halfway to the clouds and the views are amazing.
  • Rawene Village walk
Rawene has a colorful fish monger selling smoked fish and flounder to the right of the ferry landing. Next door is the nearest service station and opposite a laundromat. The 4 Square shop with Post Office facilities is open 7 days all year round. Gallery and coffee shop on the corner called No 1 Parnell. Great spot to people watch and view local art works. The Postmans Inn next door for all year boutique accommodation and panoramic harbour views. Wardies fruit and vegetable shop up the hill on right just past the historic Rawene Hotel. Opposite is a small chemist. Local school on the left and Rawene Hospital is at the top of the hill on the road exiting the town. See the Kohukohu - Rawene ferry timetable here >>
  • Waimamaku Coastal Track
Take the ferry to Rawene then continue past Opononi to the southern head of the Hokianga Harbour at the Arai Te Uru Recreation Reserve. The track hugs the coastline and is 10.1 KM ending at the Waimamaku river. Part of the walk is on the beaches, and parts a high up on the bluff with majestic views of the Tasman Sea. Dept. of conservation information here >>
